58th hostel was handed over to students of the Sabaragamuwa University on 15/02/2017 

The handing over of the 58th Hostel of 60 University Hostel Project, which was commenced by the Ministry of Higher Education under the theme of “Hostels for all the University Students”, was held on February 15, 2017 at the Sabaragamuwa University with the precedence of Mr.D.C. Dissanayake, Secretary of the Ministry of Higher Education & Highways. The Number of students that can be provided with accommodation facilities through this hostel building, which consists with 104 rooms, is 416.

  The cost incurred in this regard is Rs. 220 million. It is scheduled to open the 59th of the project at the University of Peradeniya while the 60thi.e the final hostel building at Rajarata University. Accordingly, the total cost incurred for the project is Rs.13.4 billion. A total of 24,000 students will be provided with hostel facilities through this project. .

 The second stage of this project has, also, been commenced by now. The photographs shows the participation of Mr. D.C. Dissanayake, Secretary of the Ministry, Mr. P.G. Jayasinghe, Additional Secretary, Professor Chandana Udawaththa, Vice Chancellor of the Sabaragamuwa University and Mr. Hibathul Kareem, Registrar of the University for the Occasion of the opening.

Third Phase of the Project for Construction of Hostels at Universities Commences.

 In order to implement the proposal No. 324 of the Budget Proposals - 2016 submitted by the new government under the standardizationof universities, Mr.D.C.Dissanayake, Secretary, Ministry of Higher Education and Highways signed the contracts with the respective contractors, on 17.11.2016, for constructing of 24, four storied hostels with 100 rooms that would provide hostel facilities for 9,600 students at once. By the year 2018, hostel facilities would be provided to all the male and female students studying at universities who are in need of hostel facilities through these constructions. 60 hostels were constructed under the Stage 1 & 2 of this project, and 24,000 students were provided with hostel facilities through that. The Director of the Expeditious Hostel Project, Mr. P.G. Jayasinghe - Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Higher Education and Highways stated that action had been taken to deliver the hostels that would be constructed under the Stage 3, specially, to Sri Jayewardenepura, Colombo, Wayamba, Ruhuna, Jaffna, South Eastern, Eastern and Rajarata universities, which would admit students to technological faculties in the years 2016 &2017,and in addition to the Sri Lanka Bhiksu University at Anuradhapura to provide hostel facilities for student monks. He further stated that accordingly, all the university students who required hostel facilities would be provided with that facility through that effort and the Stage 3 of that project which was commenced on a special request of Hon. Lakshman Kiriella, Minister of Higher Education and Highways, would be implemented under the complete supervision of Hon. Mohan LalGrero, State Minister of Higher Education.

PROGRAM OF PROVIDING LAPTOPS FOR UNIVERSITY STUDENTS UNDER AN INTEREST –FREE LOAN SCHEME

A significant day which is engraved in golden letters on the book of Sri Lankan university history was marked recently. It is the occasion of providing laptops for university students under an interest –free loan scheme. We are, precisely, aware that the university is the most appropriate and exact place to discover new trends of the world while engaging in a shoulder –to- shoulder competition with the expedition of the Technology, to deploy innovations for the development of the country, and to create innovative products. A massive step for the onus of bestowing the university students, who is the most intellectual group among the intelligent youth of the country, armed with technological knowledge was commenced ceremonially at the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall on May 26, 2016, which was presided by Hon. Ranil Wickremesinghe, Prime Minister of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka. A set of distinguished guests including Hon. Lakshman Kiriella, Minister of Higher Education & Highways, Hon. Mohan Lal Grero, State Minister of Higher Education, Mr. D.C. Dissanayake, Secretary of the ministry, Prof . Mohan de Silva Chairman ,UGC ,Mr. P.G. Jayasinghe, Additional Secretary and Vice chancellors of all the universities were graced the occasion.
